TRANNY Award
(go to Slide Show)

On May 8, 2002 that the City of Ripon was awarded the State of California’s TRANNY Award – “in recognition of excellence in California Transportation during 2001 for our Ripon River Crossing Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge.”  This is a statewide competition held by the State of California and sponsored by the California Transportation Foundation (non-profit).

PROJECT FACTS:

  • Bridge was originally built in January, 1997 for an agency in Florida
  • Bridge was built with a 6” camber, there had been a typographical error in the specifications, the camber was suppose to be 6’ (a new bridge was built for Florida)
  • The City of Ripon purchased the original bridge in April 1998 after seeing it advertised in the back of a trade magazine.  The City purchased the bridge at a 30% discount.
  • At the time of purchase, this bridge was the second longest pedestrian span in the United States, at 220’
  • The bridge was delivered via seven oversize truck loads and was stored at the City’s Corporation Yard until construction began.
  • This project has a total bridge length of over 600’ – crossing the Stanislaus River and reaching Stanislaus County on the south span and San Joaquin County on the north span.
  • The groundbreaking was on March 2, 2001, and the project was completed on August 24, 2001.
